  PEP COMICS #108 - 1955 was a Special Time!

(PEP COMICS #108 - cover-dated March 1955, on newsstands January 12th, 1955, with cover art unknown, but my guess is Bill Vigoda)

Imagine being Archie’s Dad… the daily hijinks you have to endure! I always felt Mr. Weatherbee deserved a lot of what he got, but Fred Andrews usually means well (even if he does jump the gun and assume a lot)…

Archie respects and loves his dad… doesn’t really fear him though…

Not like he fears Veronica’s dad!

(PEP COMICS #108 - cover-dated March 1955, on newsstands January 12th, 1955, with art by Samm Schwartz)

——

And let’s face it! He has a reason to be scared!

Archie Cartoon Violence the way we like it!

Was Wilbur ever popular? It seems like they tried to get this character going for a long time and never managed to get it past the ‘looks a lot like Archie’ phase. Even down to the same style of Archie pants!

(PEP COMICS #108 - cover-dated March 1955, on newsstands January 12th, 1955, with art by Joe Edwards)

——

Katy Keene DID have a following and remain pretty popular for years… She had her own comic in the Archie line-up that lasted for ten years, eventually ending in 1961.

(PEP COMICS #108 - cover-dated March 1955, on newsstands January 12th, 1955, with art by Bill Woggon)

I normally like these type of cultural nuggets from the era to see how they viewed things… but remember, these are fashion tips from ARCHIE ANDREWS!

Archie's Dictionary!

More cultural nuggets from 1955!

——

Jughead is tricked into wearing a rabbit costume for a play put on for charity, and then they convince him the zipper is broken, forcing him to go out in public dressed that way. He’s not too happy when he finds out…!!!

Bill Vigoda channeling some Samm Schwartz type action!

There was always a hint of sexuality to Archie Comics when it came to women, but it really would get

ramped up a bit as Harry Lucey would slowly ascend to the #1 position of Archie artists after George Frese passes away.

You can clearly see his style beginning to show itself here… (even with Jughead’s burp!)

I’ll leave you with a 4 page Joe Edwards story that has it all…

Archie and Reggie in a boxing match - a sensual kiss from Veronica - more of this issues VIOLENCE, and

…even Jughead ending up with a date!

I think we're overdue for a full Joe Edwards story!
