ARCHIE COMICS #74 - Just What I Expect!

(ARCHIE COMICS #74 - cover-dated May/June 1955, on newsstands March 4th, 1955, with cover art unknown, but my guess is Bill Vigoda)

Many themes get repeated over and over in Archie and yet, they're presented in a classic way that we don't get tired of. Reggie is in trouble for walking with Moose's girlfriend (Lottie, here, before it became Midge) and he of course needs to come up with a way to avoid/fool Moose....

These days, we now see this relationship between Moose and his girlfriend as more of a serious issue, so this isn't something we see in Archie Comics anymore...

This has never been reprinted as far as I know...

(ARCHIE COMICS #74 - cover-dated May/June 1955, on newsstands March 4th, 1955, with art by unknown...)

As far as I know, this has only been reprinted in the U.K. (Archie Annual #10 - 1956 in Black & White)

There's a lot of places Mr. Lodge ends up at the end of an Archie story - almost always due to Archie - but this was one that I wasn't expecting to see…

(ARCHIE COMICS #74 - cover-dated May/June 1955, on newsstands March 4th, 1955, with art by George Frese)

As far as I know, this has only been reprinted in the U.K. (Archie Annual #10 - 1956 in Black & White)

…Jughead gets his share of misery too!

Though there are plenty of others who fall into Archie's path, including the law!

The Classic Archie 'misunderstanding'...

Jughead has plans...

(ARCHIE COMICS #74 - cover-dated May/June 1955, on newsstands March 4th, 1955, with art by George Frese)

As far as I know, this has only been reprinted in the U.K. (Archie Annual #10 - 1956 in Black & White)

They're advertising this in March to get people to send in their money ahead of time! Brilliant!

(ARCHIE COMICS #74 - cover-dated May/June 1955, on newsstands March 4th, 1955, with art by George Frese)

As far as I know, this has only been reprinted in the U.K. (Archie Annual #10 - 1956 in Black & White)

But when talking about classic type of stories... there's always the tried and true, give and take between Archie and Veronica...

(ARCHIE COMICS #74 - cover-dated May/June 1955, on newsstands March 4th, 1955, with art by Red Holmdale?)

As far as I know, this has only been reprinted in the U.K. (Archie Annual #10 - 1956 in Black & White)

GINGER #5

Ickky in Drag!

(GINGER #5 - cover-dated 1953, on newsstands December 30th, 1952, with cover art by George Frese)

I need to get caught up with the rest of these Ginger Issues!

I think it's very under rated, the environment these artists created for the characters... simple but very effective storytelling.

(GINGER #5 - cover-dated 1953, on newsstands December 30th, 1952, with art by Samm Schwartz)

Reprinted in Betty & Veronica (Jumbo Comics) Double Digest #194 (November 2011)

This house style that Dan DeCarlo would somewhat perfect, was originally created by George Frese (here used by Samm Schwartz). It's funny but DeCarlo hasn't even come to Archie full time at this point, but I'd possibly be fooled into thinking this was HIS art....

Here's a bonus... Harry Lucey, who's not yet a regular artist on these Archie books has a story and... what a great splash page!

(GINGER #5 - cover-dated 1953, on newsstands December 30th, 1952, with art by Harry Lucey)

Last Reprinted in B & V Friends Double Digest Magazine #256 (November 2017)

We get some of his physical humor in the story as well...

But Joe Edwards, who I probably don't bring up enough, is the real star of this issue with 'Spies and Dolls'... the girls decide to go on 'strike' and they dress Ickky up as a girl to spy on them...

That's not going to end well...
